Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs), which are widely used for industrial and domestic purposes, exert adverse effects on wildlife after being used and discharged into the environment. However, their ultimate biodegradability and biodegradation pathway remains unclear. In this study, the aerobic degradability of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) by the acclimated microorganisms in active sludge was examined using shaking-flask tests. The degradation of benzene rings in NPEOs was determined using UV spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results showed that more than 80% of benzene rings were removed after 8-10 days of degradation, and the majority of NPEOs were also removed after 9 days of degradation, indicating NPEOs and the benzene... |

Chloropigments and carotenoids were measured by HPLC in an intertidal muddy sediment of Marennes-Oleron Bay (France). Concentrations were determined as a function of sediment depth at low tide. The analyses were carried out at monthly intervals over 1 yr. Pigment analysis indicated that the microphytobenthic community was dominated by diatoms throughout the sampling year. Chlorophyll b was not encountered at any time or depth, indicating that no input from macrophytic detritus had occurred at the sampling site. There was a large pool of phaeopigments a, of which phaeophorbides were the major forms (75%). A microphytobenthic bloom occurred between March and June during which phaeopigments significantly increased with a high proportion of phaeophorbides... |

The impacts of the fungicide Opus(A (R)) (epoxiconazole) on marine phytoplankton communities were assessed in a 12-day field experiment using in situ microcosms maintained underwater at 6 m depth. Three community analysis methods were compared for their sensitivity threshold in fungicide impact detection. When phytoplankton communities were exposed to 1 mu g l(-1) of epoxiconazole, no effects could be demonstrated using TTGE (Temporal Temperature Gradient gel Electrophoresis), flow cytometry or HPLC. When exposed to 10 mu g l(-1), TTGE fingerprints from PCR amplified 18S rDNA of communities exhibited significant differences compared with controls (ANOSIM, P = 0.028). Neither flow cytometry counts, nor HPLC pigment profiles allowed to show significant... |

Samples of phytoplankton cultures and of suspended particulate matter from continental, brackish and marine waters were examined by HPLC for the monosaccharide content of their hydrolysable sugar fraction. Eight monosaccharides were currently assayed and their weight compared to HPLC-assayed chlorophyll a concentrations. With the exception of oligotrophic waters, these two variables are well correlated in the various prospected environments. Glucose was always the strongly dominant form, not only in fresh and brackish waters but also in marine samples with high phytoplanktonic biomass. If samples are compared on a salinity basis, only four monosaccharides showed significant differences in their relative concentrations, as a consequence of sampling... |

Within the framework of the multi-disciplinary program Seine Aval, phenolic compounds obtained by CuO oxidation have been studied since 1995. Quantitative analyses have shown a terrestrial contribution in flood, characterized by compounds of the group P (polyols + phenol), S (syringic) and H (hydroxybenzoic). During the low water period, phenolic compounds allow a clear distinction between fluvial and estuarine suspended material. Fluvial run-off contained Syringic, Hydroxybenzoic and Vanillic phenols. In contrast, upstream penetrating marine and estuarine waters are characterized by cinnamic phenols originating from estuarine herbus. In the turbidity maximum zone, aerobic degradation of lignin material increases the (vanillic acid/vanillin) ratio. |

The egestion of particulate material as well as pigment degradation during microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton are poorly known processes. In an attempt to evaluate these processes, changes in pigment concentrations within various size fractions were monitored in batch cultures of an assemblage of a pelagic ciliate (Strombidium sulcatum) and a heterotrophic flagellate (Paraphysomonas sp.) feeding on a cyanobacterium (Synechococcus sp.) over a 10-day period. Chlorophyll a, carotenoids and phaeopigments were not found in the 0.1-0.7 mu m fraction while the pigments originally in the 0.7-3.0 mu m fraction (prey) were transferred into the > 3.0 mu m size fraction (predator). During this transfer, the carotenoids (zeaxanthin and B-carotene) were not... |

We studied a mesotrophic and a hypertrophic Mediterranean coastal lagoon, both of which had been simultaneously subjected to a nutrient input reduction for 9 yr. We compared these 2 lagoons to an oligotrophic coastal lagoon. Using bioassays comprising 24 h incubations with added phosphorus and/or ammonium, we investigated the response of the phytoplankton communities to nutrient enrichment during summer in terms of biomass, size class structure, abundance and growth. For nitrogen and phosphorus, we identified which nutrient limited phytoplankton growth, and what strategies of nutrient exploitation the communities adopted to cope with these limitations. Ultraphytoplankton dominated the 3 communities, but it differed in composition among the lagoons. Green... |

A HPLC protocol is described which permits analysis of the pigment composition of coastal and intertidal sediments. The HPLC technique has been extensively applied to phytoplankton pigments for fifteen years. Papers dealing with living benthic microphytic populations have been more rare, due to complexity existing in the sediment surface, where pigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) from several taxonomic groups of microalgae are mixed with degraded pigments from senescent phytoplankton cells and macrophytic material. The present paper describes in detail a protocol adapted from Kraay et al. (1992), which allows a good discrimination of photosynthetic pigments of microphytobenthos communities. The following procedure is recommended. Sediment samples are... |

To cope with the biotic and abiotic stresses experienced within their environment, marine macroalgae have developed certain defence mechanisms including the synthesis of photo-protective molecules against light and particularly harmful UV radiation. The aim of this study was to screen selected red algae, a highly diverse phylogenetic group, for the production of photo-protective molecules. The pigment content and composition (i.e. chlorophyll-a, phycobiliproteins and carotenoids) and the composition of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were studied in 40 species of red macroalgae collected in Brittany (France), at two distinct periods (i.e. February and July 2017). A high inter-specific variability was demonstrated in terms of pigment content and MAA... |

The analysis of humic compounds by elemental analysis, PY-GC-MS and HPLC techniques permitted determination of the origin of organic inputs, essentially terrestrial, and the effects of environmental conditions in the deposits along a north-south transect through the Rhone delta, from the river mouth to the open sea. In the prodelta the sedimentation of fine particles enriches the sediments in organic matter. The humic compound contents were relatively low in sediments, perhaps due to a rapid burying of organic matter which leads to anoxic conditions. In sediments fulvic acids are more abundant than humic acids. Elemental analysis indicated that fulvic acids were enriched in hydrogen and nitrogen as compared to humic acids. Furthermore, H/C and N/C ratios... |
